MANGALORE: Confusion prevailed in Suratkal for some time late night on Tuesday following reports that two Muslim women were being converted into Hinduism at a famous temple in Suratkal police station limits.
Reports said that a few local Muslim youth noticed two Muslim women strolling inside the Idya Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple near Suratkal at around 11 pm on Tuesday. Soon several Muslim youth gathered near the temple and the situation turned tense due to absence of any communication with the temple management. There was even suspicion if young Muslim women were converted tin to Hinduism in retaliation to the reported Love Jihad wherein young Hindu women were trapped in love and then converted.
When Panambur DySP Girish was contacted, he said “There was confusion in the area for no reason. A Muslim family from Mangalore had in fact come to the temple to free one of its members who was possessed by some evil spirit. The young women were accompanied by their family members who left for Mangalore last night itself.”
Suratkal police inspector Belliappa too admitted that there were two Muslim women in the temple. “A pooja had been arranged in the temple to free a member of the family who was possessed by some evil spirit. There was no conversion,” he clarified.
