MANGALORE: Even as the Ayisha Asmin burqah row in a Bantwal College is still afresh in public minds, yet another controversy has sprang up. This time it is from Bantwal Government First Grade College. It has been alleged that a Muslim female student who arrived in the college wearing a head scarf was allegedly attacked by students belonging to the ABVP who even reportedly tried to pull off the scarf. The college is operating on the fourth floor of a private building in BC Road.
Reports said the students belonging to the ABVP have been since long abusing the female students studying in first year BA who arrive in college wearing head scarf.
When Karavali Ale spoke to the aggrieved student Fatima Farzan she said so “A few final year students come to our class every day and take up the issue of scarf and have been pressurising us to remove our scarf. The repeated attempt to convince them of the fact that there was no problem in wearing any type of dress as long as the college had no dress code, was futile. Now they have even started ragging us. Even the complaint to the principal has been of no use.” It has been learnt that even Rubiya, another student of the same college has been subject to ragging and was insulted.
The female students have together complained to the Principal stating that on Friday evening, final year BBM students Aditya, Hariprasd, Ajay Shetty, Jeevan, Prem Kumar, Jagadish and Girish along with some of their friends, abused them and even attempted to attack and rag them.
When the College Principal Keshavayya was contacted, he while admitting that he had received a complaint on head scarf row, said a committee of teachers has been constituted to undertake a probe. He further said so far no action has been taken against students who reportedly resorted to ragging. No student has been asked to remove the scarf, the Principal clarified.
