UDUPI: Police atrocity is believed to be the cause of the death of an under trial Prakash Gorannanavar of Haveri, who reportedly committed suicide inside the sub-jail lavatory by hanging himself. The other under trials in the sub-jail who were agitated over Prakash’s death flung slippers towards the cops.
What has now been gathered is that Prakash was subject to atrocities during the Udupi SP Praveen Madhukar Pawar’s sudden visit to the sub-jail on Saturday night.
According to the under trials the cops who had taken possession of a cash of Rs 3000 which was in possession of Prakash had even stripped him to find if he had hidden any more cash. Prakash, it is learnt, was even beaten up. The under trials say Prakash who had saved the money to hand over to his lawyer who would secure him bail, was deeply hurt following this incident.
Prakash was facing charges of strangulating an aged woman Varija Shetty of Parika near Atradi and robbing the old woman’s jewellery two years ago. He was arrested while he was in hiding in his second wife’s house in Mangalore and the jewellery recovered. Though the Udupi court had acquitted him of the charges a few months ago, the family of the deceased woman had moved the High Court questioning the lower court decision. Meanwhile, Varija Shedti’s son Ratnaker Shetty had complained to Hiriadka police alleging that Prakash had threatened to kill him for moving the High Court. It was in this backdrop that Prakash was recently apprehended again.
