MANGALORE : Deputy Commissioner Poonuraj who is very well aware of the sorry state of several roads in the city corporation limits, virtually fumed with anger against the contractors and warned them against resorting to inordinate delay in executing any project. The occasion was a meeting which the DC had with contractors at the MCC office on Wednesday.
” Don’t forget that you are being provided with public funds to complete any project systematically within the given time limit. In case you are under the impresson that
you are rich and need not heed to anyone, then take up private contract instead of government projects. We do not like to test the patience of Mangaloreans,” the DC said.
When the DC asked the reason for the delay in the works, an MCC engineer said that the works were being delayed as none of the contractor is entrusted with the side drain works while taking up concretisation projects. At this juncture, one of the contrators stood up to say that the MCC owed a contract amount of Rs 7 lakh.
The DC who immediately reacted saying ” What are you talking, We have given you contract for a project worth Rs 20 crores. You yourselves finish the manhole works. The funds would be released.”
“As the concretisation of one side of the Bejai road would take at least two months, the other side should be bitumenized lest traffic would be obstructed. Though it has been two months since the concrete road from Clock Tower to AB Shetty Circle was inaugurated, still it is incomplete. We have already issued instuctions on the mode of road works after inspecting all the roads. Still you are doing the works as you please,” the DC visibly expressed his displeasure over the style of functioning of the contractors.
