MANGALORE : There has been an alarming increase in the population of stray dogs in the city limits in the recent past. Presently, complaints are heard that the MCC officials have maintained total apathy to this menace despite the stray dogs posing much problems to Mangaloreans.
It is a common sight to see these stray dogs near overflowing garbage bins which are not regularly disposed, and near the garbage bins located close by hotels. The presence of these stray dogs is a veritable threat to the passersby including children particularly if these garbage bins with stray dogs around are located near schools. There have even been reports of some of these dogs biting children.
It remains a fact that except in the city limits, wastes are not disposed regularly in the outskirts of the city. The menace of these stray dogs is high in Suratkal, Kulai and Honnakatte areas mainly owing to the neglect of the corporation towards these areas. There is also a complaint that the garbage bins are not cleared regularly by the authorities. The problems of people in these areas, is unexplainable with stray dogs around particularly when there is a power cut during night time.
Residents of these areas complain that requests made to the corporation authorities to eliminate the stray dogs has fallen on deaf ears. There has already been a vehement demand from various corners to eliminate the stray dogs whose population is bound to increase in the days to come.
