MANGALORE: We often get to read reports of young women being cheated or jilted by their lovers complaining to the police. But here is a case wherein a young man has lodged a police complaint stating that a young woman who had promised to marry him has now ditched him after swindling him of lakhs of rupees.

The story is that of Bharath Rai, son of Narayana Rai of Soodimullu Mane in Punchappady village of Puttur taluk. Bharath has complained to the police that his lover Chaitra Rai of Madoor village, her family members Sheenappa Rai, Padmavathi Rai, Santosh Kumar Rai and Janardhan Rai had even threatened him now.

The story goes as follows, Bharath Rai and the lady in question Chaitra Rai were great friends while studying at St Philomena College in Puttur. Though initially Bharath had refused her love, she had threatened to commit suicide if he did not accept her love. Later their friendship blossomed into love. As both belonged to the Bunt community they had no opposition even at the family level. Chaitra’s parents even held talks on getting the two married.

It was also agreed upon that the couple would be married after Chaitra completed her ICA course.

Now, Bharath Rai has complained that Chaitra while along with him had secured several lakhs of rupees from him for her college fees and other expenses. He said even Chaitra’s parents had availed Rs 70,000 from him towards purchase of a car. He says on different occasions he had lent them money which ran upto over Rs 4 lakhs.

The complainant said he suffered much financially after extending financial aid to Chaitra’s family which gradually began to neglect him and also refused to get him married to Chaitra.

According to Bharath, the family even began to threaten him, while Chaitra pretended to be a total stranger.

It is learnt, Chaitra’s parents as well as an uncle Santosh Kumar had threatened to kill Bharath when he objected to their plans to get Chaitra married off to a certain Janardhan Rai of Katukukke.
