MANGALORE: Government school building construction works in the district during the year 2009-2010 have suffered a setback following the failure in effective utilization of the funds sanctioned by the union government for the purpose last year under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan scheme.
The Department of Public Instructions had sanctioned Rs 8.68 lakhs for the construction of buildings to five lower primary schools in the year 2008-2009 in the district. As per the rules, the respective block education officers were entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the construction works and the condition laid down was that the works had to be complete within nine months. But owing to various reasons including legal disputes, the works are yet to be completed in some places.
According to Bantwal block education officer Sudhakar, while the construction of the Lakshmikodi school building is in progress, the works of Nadupadavu building has been stayed following a court case. The construction of the Kana school building has also been delayed for the same reasons, he said.
Lakshman, Convenor of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan says all the block education officers have been directed to see that the pending construction works were complete by September.
