U PPINANGADY : Several villagers of Hirebandadi village near here who converged at the

Nekkiladi Sri Raghavendra Kala Mandir have decided in unison to oppose the proposed Sri

Sahasralingeshwara Hydel project by constructing a dam across river Kumaradhara at Adakkal

in Hirebandadi village.

Though the villagers had initially planned to visit the project site and stall the works, the

police gathering hint of the same saw to it that the company officials arrived for talks with the

villagers.

During the meeting, the villagers adopted an adamant stand that they would let land for the

project only if they were provided maximum compensation for the land which would be

submerged due to the project. They also threatened to launch a severe movement otherwise.

The villagers also set January 30 as the deadline for the company to heed to the demand. The

company officials requested that they be allowed to conduct a survey before deciding on

anything. The administrative authorities later directed the company to suspend any work until the

doubts of the villagers were cleared.
