11 killed in gory mishap near Byndoor

KUNDAPUR : Eleven persons including seven women met a tragic end in a gory mishap that took place on the National Highway 17 between Raykanakatte and Uppunda on Thursday night.The accident took place when a Sugama bus collided head on with a Tata Sumo.
The deceased are Tauhid, Khasiya, Usma, Sharika, Shahida, Altaf, Salma, Abdul Hafeez, Sabhana, driver Babu Ali alias Jameer and Baby Ayisha. While nine of them died on the spot two others succumbed on way to hospital.
It is learnt, all the deceased were returning after medical check up at a hospital in Mangalore. The mishap took place when the Tata Sumo which was proceeding behind a lorry, turned towards the right when the lorry driver applied sudden brake, and hit against the bus coming from the opposite direction. A cow too lost its life in the collision.However none in the bus were injured in the accident.
Traffic on the highway was completely blocked for some time after the accident. Hundreds of people who had gathered at the site of the accident assisted the police personnel in admitting the injured to hospital.
A few years ago, 14 people had lost lives in a similar macabre accident that took place near Trasi Mullikatte. This is the goriest accident that took place in Udupi district this year.
