Cattle row : Hindu Vedike stages protest in Bhatkal

Posted on Nov 27th, 2009 and filed under General.

BHATKAL : THe Hindu Jagarana Vedike staged a dharna in front of the Town police station on Thursday demanding steps to curb cattle smuggling and slaughter. Security in the town has been tightened even as the Hindu organisations have alleged that arrangements have been made to slaughter hundreds of cattle for Bakrid.
The agitation continued till evening and the repeated appeal made by the police authorities to withdraw the agitation proved futile.
An incident that took place near Dongarapalli in the town on Thursday morning, led to this lightning strike. When the Vedike activists found that cattle were crammed and transported in a tempo in the area, they had informed the police. However when they realised that the cops had failed to initiate action, the Vedike alleged that one of the cattle in the tempo had died of suffocation and another seriously ill. The activists later staged a lightning protest alleging police inaction and also charging the police of colluding with the accused.
The Vedike activists who were also sore over the district in-charge minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri who failed to arrive at the spot and hear their complaint, warned that he would be gheraoed during his next visit to Bhatkal.
