Kaiga workers fall ill after consuming contaminated water

Posted on Nov 28th, 2009 and filed under General.

KARWAR : Over 40 employees of the Kaiga nuclear power plant were taken ill last night after radiation levels in their bodies increased, creating quite a panicky situation.
Operations in the first unit of Kaiga was immediately suspended after sending all the staff out. It is learnt the workers had consumed water from a nearby cooler while they were engaged in some work in the reactor pipe. Sources revealed that the water they consumed might have been contaminated by tritium, a radio active material. When all the employees were subject to a test, it was learnt that the radiation level in their bodies had increased and they were immediately shifted to the hospital of the Kaiga Nuclear Power Corporation.
Karwar Deputy Commissioner said there was no need to panic and informed that a probe has been ordered into the incident.
However, this incident has given room for doubts if there has been radiation emission from the plant and if there was negligence in the maintenance of the plant. In the backdrop of this latest incident, there has been a growing demand from the general public to ensure proper safety and precautionary measures in the plant.
