BANGALORE : The recent incident of radiation leakage in the Kaiga Nuclear Power Plant at Karwar has invited sharp reaction from anti-nuclear activists in the nation who have warned that “The incident that took place in a mega plant like Kaiga was dangerous to the security of the nation.”
Dr Surendra Gadekar, anti-nuclear activist of Surat has also demanded a national level debate in the nuclear science sector of the nation as any report of tritium reaching the hands of some disruptive forces, is very much dangerous.
Recollecting that once in July 27, 1991, tritium leakage had occurred in the heavy water plant managed by the Nuclear Power Department of Rajasthan, he said such incidents take place due to lack of supervision from the authorities concerned.
Stating that tritium was an expensive chemical, Dr Surendra strongly felt that the negligence on the part of the workers while undertaking maintenance works might have led to the recent incident.
On the other hand, YB Ramakrishna, Co-ordinator of Citizens’ Alternative to Nuclear Energy of Bangalore, said any such leakage would have an adverse impact on the population around Kaiga and demanded that a health survey of people residing in the vicinity of the Kaiga plant be immediately conducted.
