SHRC Chairman seeks report on Kaiga incident

BANGALORE : The State Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice SR Nayak has directed all authorities concerned to submit the investigative report into the recent incident at the Kaiga nuclear power plant wherein there had been a reported radiation leakage.
The Chairman opined that as the radiation leakage was dangerous from the point of view of the health of the people as well as environment, the Commission thought that this incident was relating to human rights. Not only that,the media reports on the serious loopholes in the security and maintenance aspects of Kaiga has also brought in fears in the minds of the people, the SHRC chief felt.
The Commission Chairman also felt that there was some meaning behind the fears of the NPCIL and Atomic Energy Department officials that the recent incident was an act of sabotage.
The SHRC Chairman in a notice served to the Station Director of Kaiga Atomic Power Station, NPCIL, Chief Secretary of State Government, IGP of Western Range, Uttara Kannada Deputy Commissioner and District Superintendent of Police, have sought an explanation with regard to the security measures initiated by the project authorities. The Commission Chairman has also directed that the report be submitted within one month.
