MANGALORE: The Mangalore city corporation has approved the proposal to construct footpaths on either sides of eight prominent roads of the city, bringing in much relief to Mangaloreans who were worried over the absence of footpaths on many of the newly concretized roads.
The roads which will get footpaths include Kulur-Kavoor Road, AB Shetty Circle-Hamilton Circle road, KSRTC junction-Kuntikan road, the road from Bejai Circle to Chandrika Extension, Lalbagh-Bejai Circle Road, Hampankatta Circle-Nehru Maidan Road and Karangalpady market road. Of these roads, the Lalbagh-Bejai Road and Hampankatta Circle-Nehru Maidan Road have been concretized while the works are in progress in rest of the roads. Footpaths would also be laid for the Mannagudda Gurji-Durgamahal road.
Already the State finance Commission has sanctioned grants to the MCC for the year 2009-2010 for the construction of inter-lock footpaths. GV Rajashekharmurthi, Executive Engineer of the MCC said the government would also be providing a special grant of Rs 100 crores for the road works.
The tender invitation process for the footpath construction works is expected to commence shortly. Already interlock footpaths have been laid for the Nehru Maidan- AB Shetty Circle road.
City Mayor Shanker Bhat has informed that the corporation has plans to complete all the road concretization works that are presently taken up, by the next one and a half month period.
He further informed that the state government has already issued a directive to the Mangalore city corporation to complete all the road concretization works within the scheduled period failing which the Rs 100 crore grant would be stayed. The government has also instructed to utilize the Rs 100 crore grant by September end, he informed.
Though the road concretization works had slowed down a bit due to the heavy rains during the past two months, the same have once again picked up now.
