MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation meeting held on Wednesday witnessed heated exchange of words between the ruling and opposition members when independent member Mariamma Thomas demanded disciplinary action against those officials who fail to adhere to the resolutions taken at the corporation meetings.
She made this demand referring to the failure of the authorities to initiate any action despite the MCC at its previous sessions deciding to take steps to issue door number to those who have been deprived of the same.
No sooner the meeting began Mariamma took the mayor as well as officials to task for the non-implementation of the resolution passed at the pervious meeting. Even opposition Congress leader Harinath and former mayor Shashidhar Hegde backed Mariamma.
Reacting to the complaint, Commissioner Dr Vijaya Prakash said though the corporation has not been biased while issuing door numbers to residential buildings, the government’s advice had been sought with regard to the discretion to be adopted while issuing door numbers to unauthorized buildings. He also said that the government would issue necessary instructions in this regard within a week.
This reply did not seem to satisfy Mariamma Thomas who said what they were demanding was not door numbers to unauthorized buildings but door numbers to the houses of the poor.
CPIM member Jayanthi Shetty demanded that the corporation took steps to undertake patch works of several of the roads in the city which are in a bad shape even as the main roads are being concretized.
