BELTHANGADY: A clash between two groups of students of the Mundaje Aided Junior College, over saffron and green flags, reportedly culminated in the attack on the local panchayat president Balakrishna Shetty who had intervened to settle the matter.
It is learnt, students of the college, had decorated the college premises with colourful buntings on Friday. Saffron and a green flags put up by students were flying high in the college grounds. There was a feeling that the saffron and green flags reflected harmony and amity between the two communities. However, the same night some miscreants had removed the green flags and had retained only the saffron flags. On Saturday, being the annual day of the college, the missing green flags had led to some confusion when one group of students demanded that even the saffron flags be removed as the green flags were missing. The group even threatened to boycott the celebrations otherwise.
When the GP chief and others intervened and defended the presence of the saffron flag, they were reportedly attacked by a group of students.
