BANGALORE: State Human Rights Commission Chairman SR Nayak who has taken strong exception to the recent act of handcuffing farmers at the Dharwad prison, has thundered that those responsible for this act must be prosecuted and pushed behind bars.
Speaking to reporters after visiting a photography exhibition on the plight of the flood hit people, at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here, Justice Nayak described the handcuffing of farmers as a heinous act. He said it was not enough if those responsible for it are merely suspended from service.
“Law permits the police to handcuff only dreaded criminals and those who are likely to escape. The handcuffing of farmers who were ill owing to the hunger strike, is an inhuman act,” he resented.
