UDUPI: Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt has threatened to launch an indefinite hunger strike at the Permude temple from February 4 onwards if the government failed to withdraw the forcible land acquisition for the second phase of MSEZ by January 22 and also to denotify the lands which have been notified for the second phase.
Speaking to reporters here, the seer said he would completely shun solid food and consume only milk during the hunger strike. “The objective of my hunger strike is to create an awakening in the society and the government, in the better interests of the district,” he informed.
The seer said that he was displeased to note that the authorities have commenced the process of land acquisition for the second phase of MSEZ despite the ministers and legislators assuring him of disallowing implementation of the second phase.
“The SEZ authorities have embarked on acquisition of 19 acre land for the second phase without paying any compensation. Though SEZ officials are stating that 50 per cent of people have been provided compensation, nine families have not yet received the same. Meanwhile, notice has been issued to forcibly acquire 4 acres of land on January 22, 2010 without providing any compensation,” he revealed.
“My objective is to nip in the bud the process of acquiring land for the second phase. A total of 2035 acres of land which has been notified for the second phase should be immediately denotified,” he demanded.

“Doubts regarding Nagarjuna
Referring to the Udupi thermal power plant, the seer said he had several doubts regarding the project. “Home minister VS Acharya has assured to clear my doubts regarding the project through experts. But so far he has made no effort in this direction,” the seer added.
“I am aware that though the project officials are arguing that they would generate electricity using modern technology thereby reducing pollution, nothing would take place as assured, similarly I also know that electricity cannot be provided at lower rate using modern technology,” Sri Vishwesha Theertha said.
