MANGALORE: It is widely believed that the recent visit of Medical Education Minister Ramachandregowda in Mangalore and his favouring privatization of government hospitals was a part of the plans of Home Minister VS Acharya to bring the two government hospitals Wenlock and Ladygoschen in Mangalore under the control of the KMC.
It is also being said that the Minister visited Mangalore mainly to hold a high level secret meeting to hand over the two government hospitals to the care of the KMC. Reports also say that the home minister had great liking towards the KMC hospital where his son was working as a doctor.
It may be recalled here that the Medical Education Minister Ramachandregowda, who visited the city on Monday had said “The KMC has come forward to maintain the cleanliness and security divisions in Wenlock and Ladygoschen Hospitals at its own cost.†The minister had also said that the present vacant posts of nurses would be filled by the government while the additional staff and nurses would be provided by the KMC. He had also divulged that the KMC authorities had sought representation in the Arogya Suraksha Samithi too.
The Minister had further said “The KMC has come forward to construct an additional building for the Ladygoschen Hospital within one year as per the request of the government and that apart from providing better facilities to the patients; it would also benefit the medical studentsâ€
The minister by saying so has clearly hinted that the government was all set to make the poor patients in the government hospitals forced to be a subject of experiment for the medical students.
In the year 2006, the government on the pretext of better facilities, had fixed certain fees for different services offered at the hospital inconveniencing the patients a lot. Finally the government had withdrawn the policy following severe protest. But again the government introduced the fee policy in the year 2009 on the protest of better maintenance and is now all set to hand over the cleanliness and security of the hospitals to the KMC.
