MANGALORE: It has been reliably learnt that the ABVP had convened a secret midnight meeting at the retired VC Kaveriappa’s government quarters on Tuesday, after facing a setback in its bid to create a clamour against the MCJ lecturer Umeshchandra, when several students withdrew from the agitation.
It is being said that the former VC permitted the ABVP to hold the meeting aimed at discussing the future course of action, in his residence as he has been furious over the lecturer who had refused to sign an appeal stating that KM Kaveriappa was innocent in the case of the suspicious death of the university lecturer Dr Sujatha.
Speaking to The Canara Times, Nirmal Kumar, an office bearer of the district branch of the Dalita Sangharsha Samiti said “The ABVP meeting was underway at Kaveiappa’s government quarters till midnight. A probe should be undertaken on this matter wherein the former VC was using his government quarters even after his retirement and has even allowed a controversial organization like the ABVP to hold its meeting.â€
Meanwhile, MCJ students led by Kevin Mendonca submitted a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor KK Acharya stating so “most of the students are not backing the protest held on January 18 against Umeschandra. Some students of the department however took part in the protest by leveling false allegations against the lecturer as they did not agree with Umeschandra’s style of teaching and also his true concern for the well being of the society.â€
No arrest of accused!
SP Ananda, district president of Dalita Sangharsha Samithi (Ambedkar) while taking strong exception to the failure of the police department to arrest the accused in the case of the abuse of a Dalit lecturer, despite filing an FIR against the accused, has warned of severe agitation if the accused were not arrested.
It may be recalled here that a case has been registered against Vijaya Karnataka under IPC section 989, 499, 500 and 501 of the SC ST Prevention of Atrocities Act for publishing a derogatory and abusive write up against the Dalit lecturer Umeschandra. The FIR has named the editor Vishweshwar Bhat, Srisha Punacha and KV Nagaraj as the accused.
