MANGALORE: State Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice SR Nayak has regretted the rising custodial deaths in the state.
Speaking to reporters in the city, Justice Nayak said the Commission has been receiving complaints of custody deaths every day.
Stating that the law and order scenario in Bellary district was at its worst, he added the SHRC had recommended to the government to transfer the SP of Bellary district.
A letter has already been written to the home secretary and the chief minister to revamp the district administration of Bellary lest there may be a further breakdown of law and order scenario in that district, Justice Nayak said.
“As on December end 2009, the Commission has registered a total of 13980 cases including 3269 cases which were voluntarily registered by the Commission on the basis of media reports and other information. Of these 6740 cases have been settled, he added.
Regretting that some NGOs were functioning on the pretext of protecting human rights with the sole intention of making money, he said there are some other organisations which contact the Commission only when the rights of minorities are violated. “There should not be any hesitation to complain even when the human rights of the majority community are violated. The NGOs must fight for the cause of all cases of violation of human rights,†he said.
