MANGALORE : The District Committee of the Dalitha Sangharsha Samithi(Ambedkar) has won commendation for its act of giving protection to an old Brahmin lady who has been a victim of police atrocities after being driven out by her employer.

The woman Sarojamma, wife of Venkatramana Rao of Belthangady and her son Subrahmanya who were subject to atrocities reportedly by their employer and Belthangady circle inspector Gangireddy, had on August 27 contacted the district unit of the Samithi which has made arrangements for their stay at a house at Neermarga. All this could be made possible with the efforts of the DSS district Convenor SP Anand , Jagadish Pandeshwar and other leaders of the Committee.

As reported earlier, Sarojamma and her son Subrahmanya worked as domestic helps in the residence of K Somashekhar Rao of Greenland House of Permanu in Belthangady. As the employer had harassed them by not paying their wages regularly, the two had lodged a complaint at the Help Desk of the SP’s office and later had been to the Belthangady station as per the directions given at the Help Desk.

It was then that the two were reportedly assaulted by Belthangady inspector Gangireddy and the employers of the mother and son duo. Following this incident, yet another complaint was lodged with the SP.

The action of the Dalitha Sangharsha Samithi which otherwise used to fight for the cause of the Dalits, in coming to the aid of a Brahmin woman and her son who have been subject to atrocities by their employer who belongs to the same community, has been widely appreciated.
