Magisterial powers to be vested with police commissioner

MANGALORE : Gopal Hosur, in-charge Commissioner of Mangalore Police Commissionerate and Western Range IGP has said that the Police Commissioner would henceforth be vested with the magisterial powers otherwise exercised by the Deputy Commissioner or the Tahsildar, in the newly constituted Mangalore Police Commissionerate.
Addressing press persons at the IGP office in the city on Saturday, Hosur said henceforth within the Commissionerate limits, it will be the Commissioner who would decide on matters pertaining to permitting processions, enforcement of Goonda Act, Arms Act and fixing deadlines for liquor shops and live bands.
He said the Mangalore Police Commissionerate limits will have within its limits, 8 stations of each of Mangalore sub-division and Panambur sub-division. He said the demand to include even Moodbidri station which is in Panambur sub-division within the Commissionerate limits, is under consideration.
There will be two more traffic police stations along with a traffic sub-division, Hosur informed.
The Commissionerate may need at least two more years to operate in a full-fledged manner. A total of 70 police personnel including two sub-inspectors, 4ASIs and 18 constables would be serving the commissionerate at present.
District Superintendent of Police Dr Subrahmanyeshwara Rao who was also present, said CCTVs will be installed in 15 locations in the city to keep an eye on speeding vehicles and vehicles which escape after committing accidents. The corporation, he said has permitted to have CCTV cameras in Lalbagh, AB Shetty, PVS Circle, Hampankata and near Bunts Hostel.
