Kannur case : PUCL fact-finding report ready

MANGALORE : A PUCL team has prepared a fact-finding report regarding the recent incident in Kannur wherein a few police personnel had forced a tempo driver cum owner to consume liquor while taking him to the hospital, after the police vehicle hit the person who was walking on the roadside.
The PUCL District President PB D’Sa, Vice President Mohammad Kabeer, General Secretary Harsharaj Gatti and others prepared the report after interacting with Ibrahim, a resident of Daimbu in Kannur, who was a victim in this case. Ibrahim is receiving treatment at Unity Hospital.
The report has mentioned that the police took an injured Ibrahim to hospital only after they were rapped by the public for causing the accident at Kannur near Adyar when Ibrahim was walking towards home after parking his tempo which had developed some problem, in a nearby garage. The report also mentioned that one of the eyewitness Ashok who left for Wenlock in his scooter along with the police vehicle, though had reached the hospital, the police vehicle arrived there at least half an hour late and it is suspected that the police act of stopping their vehicle near a bar enroute to purchase liquor and force Ibrahim to drink the same, might have led to the delay.
The report has demanded that the DAR police who were in the police vehicle pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Ibrahim, towards medical expenses and has also urged that action be taken against all the police personnel in the vehicle. Presently only one police personnel has been suspended from service following this incident.
