KARWAR : State Human Rights Commission Chairman Justice SR Nayak has taken strong exception to the comments made by the State Home Minister VS Acharya on the recent attacks on churches describing the same as ‘trivial incidents.’
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the deputy commissioner and other senior officials in Karwar on Sunday, SR Nayak said the Home Minister making such a comment when religious freedom is one of the important rights of an individual, only revealed his ignorance.
Stating that churches have been targeted in the state since 2007, he added that the state government did not seem much bothered about such organized crime. He also questioned sharply as to whether there was anything called intelligence wing in the state.
People attacking religious places should first try to know that the constitution permits individuals to embrace religion of their choice, he said. Justice Nayak also took the police department to task for its failure to arrest a Sri Rama Sene leader named Shanker Nayak no sooner he had issued a written statement that churches would be attacked.
Justice Nayak further made a strong comment when he said that the law and order situation in the state was deteriorating.
