Cops in lead in Dalit atrocities ! SP expresses concern

Posted on Feb 1st, 2010 and filed under Local News.

MANGALORE : District Superintendent of Police Dr Subrahmanyeshwara Rao has expressed concern that majority of the complaints registered by SC, ST people in the district are against the police department itself.
Speaking after accepting complaints from Dalit leaders the SP said “ In most of the cases of Dalit atrocities, the complaints are against police personnel. In this regard, effort would be made to create awareness among police personnel by bringing them together. Though it would also be a difficult task to bring all police personnel together in one place, an effort would still be made to hold such a meeting.”
Earlier Dalit leaders complained to the SP that the Mangalore University lecturer Umeshchandra case was an attempt to prevent a Dalit from rising to the top post. They even complained that there was even a ploy to transfer police personnel who back the Dalits. There are instances of some officials colluding with communal forces and neglecting Dalit interests, they alleged.
Speaking at a meeting of SC ST representatives convened by the SP at the SP Guest House on Sunday, Lecturer Umeshchandra alleged that a personnel in the Konaje station named Cherian with whom he complained about someone breaking open his house and searching for the attendance register in May 2009 during his absence, had behaved rudely with him and also hesitated to accept the complaint in the absence of the SI. Even the SI when contacted behaved in an inhuman fashion, he alleged. He further said the Konaje SI had even misbehaved with him on another occasion when he had informed the SI that the constable who was deputed to provide security to him as he was facing life threat, was not providing security while he was conducting classes.
Even Anand SP, district Convenor of the Dalita Sangharsha Samithi (Ambedkar) complained that the Konaje SI had spoke rudely to him over telephone during the protest staged by the Dalit associations in the University campus.
He also complained that there had been no action so far on the complaint lodged by the Dalit organizations with regard to the suspicious death of a Dalit labourer named Rajappa working in the farms of former minister Nagaraj Shetty at Panjikallu in Bantwal, about a year ago.
Reacting to this, the SP directed the officials to complete investigations into this case before the next meeting.
