BANGALORE: The stage is set for the re-entry of the senior Congress leader and the present Uttarakhand governor Margaret Alva, into active politics. Reports indicate that the Congress High Command was contemplating to give Maggie, the former MP of Kanara constituency, additional responsibility in the party.
The grand felicitation programme organized for Margaret by her followers in Sirsi on the coming Sunday, is believed to be the first step towards her re-entry to active politics. According to one source, Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi, has a proposal to make Margaret the KPCC chief and has already held talks with party leaders in this direction.
Meanwhile, the reports of the likely re-entry of Maggie into active politics after she was appointed the governor of Uttarakhand following two successive defeats from the Canara Look Sabha constituency, has already given sleepless nights to several senior party leaders. Many even have the fear that there might be every chance of Margaret who is close to the party president Sonia Gandhi, neglecting others in the party in order to have her own way.
In fact Margaret had at one time invited the wrath of the party high command in the state, after she had made a controversial statement that the Congress lost the assembly election of 2008 as the party had sold the tickets to those who had paid the highest amount. But she who later on became the governor of Uttarakhand, courtesy Sonia, is now eying the KPCC presidentship as well as Rajya Sabha membership.
There is also a belief that Margaret may also leave no stone unturned in bringing to the limelight her ambitious son. In fact she had reportedly desired to get her son fielded in any of the constituencies in Uttara Kannada during the previous assembly elections but had failed in her effort. Now with the possibilities of her reentry into state politics being high there is also every chance of her making use of the opportunity to even uplift her son. Already her son Niveditha is one of the general secretaries of the state unit of the Congress.
It also remains no secret that two Congress stalwarts of Uttara Kannada namely Margaret and RV Deshpande, have been pulling each other’s legs since some time. It is still not clear if Margaret would replace Deshpande as KPCC chief or if she would be appointed as the in-charge of the Congress affairs in the state. Still an interesting battle is likely between the two Congress bigwigs of the state in the days to come.
