MANGALORE : Police had to resort to lathi charge in Bunder area in the city on Monday following stone pelting by an irate mob which wanted all shops in the Bunder area to down their shutters in respect of the demise of the Mangalore-Chembarika Khazi M Abdulla Musliyar in Kasargod. The incident even left rumour mills spinning in the city resulting in a tense situation for some time.
It is learnt some Muslim youth initially engaged in a verbal duel with Vishnu Raikar, the owner of a hardware shop on Azeezuddin Road when the latter refused to close down the shop. The argument of the Muslim youth was that why the shop could not be closed in respect of the Khazi when it could be closed for two days as per the call given by a Hindu organization. When both sides did not budge, there was stone pelting incident and the Bunder police who arrived at the spot had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the mob.
Meanwhile, following a complaint lodged by Vishnu Raiker that his shop had incurred a loss of Rs 5000 in stone pelting, police arrested Aslam (21), Ravoof (30), Ismail (35), Iqbal (29), Ashraf (18) and Imtiyaz (25) and produced them before the court.
