MANGALORE: The district administration has dropped the proposal of acquiring lands in Bappanadu and Karnadu villages near Mulki for the proposed four-laning of the Suratkal-Kundapur stretch of the highway. This decision of the district administration meanwhile has left the fate of the proposed bye-pass at Mulki hanging fire.
It has been gathered that the district administration decided to drop the two villages from the purview of land acquisition for road widening owing to political pressure.
The Gazette of India had the mention of the circular for the land acquisition in Bappanadu, Karnad, Chitrapu, Bellayaru, Padupanambur, Haleyangady, Pavanje and Suratkal for the project
But another circular issued on August 29, 2009 has dropped the two villages from the list, considering the opposition for the same.
The bye-pass project
The National Highway Authority of India had planned to construct a 1.9 meter long bye-pass between Karnad and Bappanadu in Mulki, in the backdrop of the proposed four-laning of the highway. However, NHAI sources have revealed that the cancellation of the land acquisition process in the two villages would not only affect the highway works but also lead to the cancellation of the bye-pass project.
