BANGALORE : The state government has snatched the State Governor’s supreme authority in making appointments to the posts of Vice Chancellors of three universities of Agricultural Sciences and one University of Horticultural Sciences in the state. Henceforth, the governor will have to finalize the names of one of the three names recommended for the post by a panel which will be appointed by the government as per rules. By doing so, the government has curtailed the governor’s rights to send back the list of approved names in case of any controversy. In other words, the governor will have no other go but to finalize one of the three names mentioned by the committee. It is being observed that this latest development was the result of the cold war between the government and the governor since some time.
Earlier the governor not only had the right to send back the list and ask for a new list, but also had the right to appoint a vice chancellor on his own if he found even the second list to be unsatisfactory.
Bharadwaj unhappy
State Governor Hamsa Raj Bharadwaj who has expressed displeasure over the government move has said “ This is an attempt to deliberately weaken the powers of the governor. The government since long has been trying to curtail the supreme authority of the governor.â€
