Undivided Dakshina Kannada district has emerged as a major economic hub with the setting up of several mega projects including MRPL, MCF, power plants and initiation of ambitious projects like airport expansion and the MSEZ.We have due respect to the promises made that these projects would offer immense employment opportunities to the educated youth of the district considered the Mecca of education. Accordingly when several industries were set up here, the people here sacrificed their houses and properties for the same.
This eventually resulted in destruction of agricultural land apart from creating numerous health problems to the people, a direct impact of the pollution caused by these projects. The jobs in these projects went to people of other states while the locals had to be satisfied with third grade jobs. The result -our educated young men and women had to struggle hard to find jobs.
Leave apart the accidents that have been taking place in MRPL considered our pride, the people of the district could not even get diesel and petrol at lower rates even when they had sacrificed much for this company. We instead are paying higher prices for fuel.
How far is it proper on the part of MRPL to resort to campus selection process in outside states instead of doing so in our very own district which has thousands of engineering graduates who have come out from renowned technological institutes ?
It is not proper on the part of the MRPL to recruit inexperienced candidates from outside states, instead of promoting the diploma holders from the district serving the company. The Kannada Rakshana Vedike has also received numerous letters complaining that the employees from outside states in MRPL do not even know the local dialect.
Before we think in terms of launching a movement by bringing together all engineering students of the district, a request to the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry which has always shown keen interest in bringing more industries into the district, to take up this cause and try to secure jobs to our youth in the company. Not only that, the Kanara Chamber should also hold talks with the authorities concerned, and secure justice to the people of the district.
In case our demands are not conceded the Vedike through its student cell is ever ready to launch a movement against the companies which behave in a dictatorial fashion after making the people here sacrifice much for their cause.
In case our demand is not conceded, then please consider this an invitation to launch a movement. The ball is in your court. People are fast losing their patience.

President, Kannada Rakshana Vedike, DK unit
