Advocates set 10-day deadline to trace Preetham

MANGALORE: Advocates under the aegis of the Mangalore Bar Association took out a silent procession from the District Court complex to the DC office on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum demanding a CBI probe into the case of the mysterious missing of city’s young advocate Preetham Kumar. The delegation that met the DC and submitted the memorandum was led by the Association President Chengappa. The agitators have also set a ten day deadline to the police department to trace the missing advocate failing which they would resort to an intense state wide stir.

Earlier, addressing the agitating lawyers, Chengappa while accusing the police department of failure to expose the mystery behind the case, demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI for a thorough investigation. He also complained that the police department had failed to bring to justice the accused in the cases of murder and murder attempts on advocates in the district.

“The police in order to hush up the case are hell bent upon proving that a body that was considered unclaimed and buried at Brahmavar, was that of Preetham.Even when medical reports prove that the body was that of a person aged above 50, the police continue to claim that the body was that of Preetham. This has made it clear that there was political pressure on the police department,”Chengappa alleged.

Narayana D Poojari, President of the Karnataka Bar Association who also spoke, said it was nothing but ironical that men who fight in the law courts seeking justice to their clients, have to themselves take to the streets seeking justice for them.

Another senior advocate Purushottam Poojari said “ After my student and young advocate Naushad was murdered, attempts are being made to attack advocates. If young advocates like Preetham go missing, can we believe that there is police protection to advocates ?””Such incidents are a black spot on the image of the police department,” he said.
