MANGALORE : The State Government which has been unable to provide rice at Rs 2 per kg to the poor even after two years after coming to power, has failed to keep up its words. What the government needs is just Rs 70 crore annually to distribute at Rs 2 per kg the rice provided to it by the Centre at Rs 3 per kg. The government which does not mind contributing in crores to mutts and mandirs is totally disregardful to the plight of the poor,” alleged CPI (M) State Secretary VJK Nair.

He was addressing a public meet organized by the CPI(M) Dakshina Kannada District Committee as part of its state wide campaign against the anti-people policies of the state government.

The developmental programmes initiated by the government under private-public projects are only aimed at promoting the private industries. There have been irregularities even in the acquisition of land from farmers at cheaper rates, he alleged.

J Balakrishna Shetty, Vasanth Achari, B Madhava, UB Lokayya and other party leaders were present on the occasion.
