MANGALORE: Angry customers of the Lakshmi Sauharda Cooperative Bank in the city picketed the Naguri Branch of the Bank on Wednesday under the leadership of various organizations, protesting against what they termed the irresponsible behaviour of the bank management.
The Bank’s inaction in making arrangements to refund or compensate the affected customers even after one year following a theft of gold worth Rs 60 lakhs that was pledged in the Bank, apart from a cash of Rs one lakh, has infuriated the customers.
The customers complained that any request by them to the bank management to return their gold or at least return to them the market value of the gold pledged by them, got a negative reply.
They also alleged that the lack of adequate security arrangements in the Bank was the main reason for the theft.
Sunil Kumar Bajal, DYFI leader who took part in the protest said there was a suspicion of the involvement of the bank management in the incident.
The agitation was withdrawn after the Bank management board member MP Puranik assured to arrive at a suitable decision after convening a meeting by next Saturday.
The agitators have warned of severe protest if no step was taken to yield to their demand by then.
Activists of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and DYFI took part in the protest.
