BANTWAL: The Social Democratic Party of India staged a protest on Tuesday demanding the immediate suspension of the works of the second vented dam at Tumbay until a scientific study was undertaken on the areas that are likely to be inundated due to the project and suitable compensation provided to the affected people.
M Subrahmanya Bhat, General Secretary of the Action Committee of People affected by the dam, emphasized the need for the government to maintain transparency while undertaking the survey.
He said the survey has to be undertaken in the presence of farmers and the works should be commenced only after providing suitable compensation to the affected farmers.
Stating that the farmers would not come in the way of the project if their demands were heeded to, he said the agitation would not stop until the government announced the undertaking of a scientific survey.
Hundreds of people took part in a jatha that was taken out from the Tumbay dam area upto the National Highway.
Prominent among the participants were NK Idinabba, Mohammad Iqbal, Mohammad Mustafa, SP Sahul Hameed, Haneef Khan, SH Sahul Hameed, Abdul Kalam and Abdul Nasir. The protest was inaugurated by senior leader Muruva Mahabala Bhat.
Mangalore’s Assistant Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalakatte arrived at the spot and accepted the memorandum from the agitators. At one juncture, the agitators refused to budge until the DC arrived at the spot, but withdrew their agitation after they were assured that time would be fixed for a meeting with the DC to discuss the issue.
