Rain, lightning claim 4 lives in Udupi dist

UDUPI: Four persons including a child were killed in lightning strike during Thursday’s heavy rains accompanied with strong winds that lashed several parts of Udupi district. Several were reported injured in lightning strike and several houses too damaged.

A 14 year old boy named Abhilash Shetty was killed when lightning struck him while he was standing outside his house along with other family members at Kukkuje in Ajekar village of Karkala taluk.

In yet another incident, a two year old girl Sinchana, daughter of one Chandra Poojari at Devalkunda Jaadi was killed instantly due to lightning strike when a neighboring lady named Saroja was standing in front of the house with the child in her arms. Even Saroja sustained injuries in the lightning strike and is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Meanwhile, two persons lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries when a tree rolled over a car near Chennadi cross in Kundapur taluk. The deceased Navaz (22) and Khaza (30) were heading towards Kadur from Kirimanjeshwar, when the mishap took place. The injured Irfan, Rehman, Shariel, Simaz, Shahira, Dilkush, Meherban, Paras have been admitted to a hospital in Koteshwar.

The mishap took place when the family members were travelling in the car together to distribute invitation for a function. It is learnt, the soil near the tree had been excavated for the road widening and the tree collapsed all of a sudden due to the heavy winds.

One of the injured is said to be in critical condition.
