MANGALORE : Former Union Minister and five time MP from Udupi Parliamentary constituency Oscar Fernandes was recently awarded honorary doctorate during the Mangalore University Convocation. Though there was resentment in some corners over conferring the honorary doctorate to Oscar, it is undebatable that Oscar is a revered politician with great humanitarian values.
Oscar while speaking to reporters recently even said “ I have never craved for awards. I accept this honour conferred on me by the Mangalore University humbly. Though it is somewhat irksome, I have agreed to accept the honour with some commitment.â€
“ Though I am not a graduate, I have gained knowledge without the help of any teacher and am involved in social service activities.â€
“ I dreamt of becoming a doctor during my childhood. But during second PUC exams, I had to suspend my education half way through due to unforeseen circumstances. Later. I worked as an LIC agent. Agriculture is something that attracted me. Initially I even used to give tuition to PUC and degree students,†says Oscar.
Oscar with a bent of mind for social service has been elected to Parliament five times and is presently the Rajya Sabha Member for the second term. Oscar who has also been a member of CWC since long has served as AICC General Secretary and thrice as Karnataka Congress President. He is undoubtedly a simple politician who is aloof from controversies.
