PUTTUR: In a first ever historic decision, the Shekhamale Jamaat here has declared that the Jamaat would boycott any wedding in the Jamaat, wherein the groom has accepted dowry. A resolution was passed in this regard at the annual general meeting of the Shekhamale Muhiyuddeen Jumma Masjid held on April 11. The Jamaat leaders concluded that the menace of dowry which had social, economic and religious impact in the society, could not be eradicated merely through speeches and articles, but could be wiped out only when grassroot level efforts are made. The Jamaat was also declared as a dowry free Jamaat on the occasion. Representatives of nearly 90 Jamaats took part in the meeting and the Shekhamale Jamaat has the distinction of being the first Jamaat among eh Jamaats in DK and Udupi districts, which has passed such a resolution.
The Jamaat leaders said if it came to their notice that any person was getting married by accepting dowry, then no other family of the Jamaat would attend the wedding and the marriage would also not be registered in the marriage register of the local masjid.
The meeting was held under the presidentship of KA Ahmed Haji, Honorary President of the Jamaat and was attended by SM Basheer Ahmed, President, KP Sadiq Haji, Vice President, SP Basheer, Secretary, Siddique Haji, Treasurer, Ismail Haji Koudichar and others.
KP Ahmed Haji says the menace of dowry could be eradicated from the community if all Jamaats followed suit.
