MOODBIDRI: “Can caste based discrimination and conversions be prevented by leaders having lunch in Dalits’ houses on Ambedkar Jayanthi?†Such a question has now arisen after the Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel had lunch in the house of a Dalit at Kumeru in Koppa of Badagamijaru village on Wednesday.
The fact however is that the caste based discrimination or the conversion of Dalits was not because people of other castes did not have lunch with Dalits. Had it been the reason that there should have been a social change after Nalin had lunch in the house of a Dalit at Mastikatte last year. The main reason for the discrimination however is the absence of social justice to the deprived sections of the society.
Had political leaders made up some mind in this regard and saw to it that the Dalits progressed both on educational and professional front, then the situation would have much changed as of now. Until moves are made in this direction such publicity gimmicks of having lunch along with Dalits at houses of Dalits may prove to be of no use but may only provide an opportunity to the Dalits to air their woes.
