Parking fee to be hiked in city ; proposal awaiting MCC nod

MANGALORE : Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj has said that the traffic congestion on city roads would be reduced once the new parking regulations and hike in parking fee as recommended by the City Corporation and the Police Department would be implemented. Once the MCC decides to revise the parking fee, the motorists will have to pay a higher parking free. Earlier if a parking fee paid was for a four hour duration, henceforth the fee would be for every hour of parking. There is a proposal to have different fee structure for different vehicles and the MCC council is expected to take a decision in this regard at the earliest.

The DC informed that the police department has proposed reforms in the parking system in order to control artificial traffic congestion in the city many a time. The new parking system as well as the no-parking system would be effectively implemented, he said.

The four phase parking system would be implemented in Balmattta, Hampankatta, Central Market and Bejai KSRTC area in order to ensure smooth vehicular movement.
The task of collecting the parking fee would be entrusted to the MCC and the police department. But the MCC would not be responsible for collecting parking free in private spaces in front of malls, shops and other establishments.

The DC also said that those violating the traffic rules would be subject to action. He said vehicle parking on footpaths has been banned and the drivers would be penalized if found parking their vehicles on footpaths. Action would also be taken against bus drivers, conductors, time keepers and owners who violate rules in parking buses.

A loud speaker would be installed at Jyothi Circle to ensure smooth movement of traffic while CCTVs will be installed at all prominent roads. Two vehicles will also be on duty to evict the vehicles parked in no-parking area.

As per the new rules, four-wheeler parking is permitted from Balmatta Christian institute gates upto Amriteshwar Tyres, two wheeler parking from Amriteshwara Tyres to Healthcare medicals ; four-wheeler parking from Healthcare medicals upto Nayak’s opticals, four-wheeler parking from Emjays Complex upto Wine gate ; two-wheeler parking from Skyline Arcade upto Don Bosco Hall and upto Liquid Lounge ; 4-wheeler parking from Liquid Lounge upto Hotel Soorya cross ; 2-wheeler parking opposite Khazana jewellery, 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler parking in phases from AB Shetty Circle upto UP Mallya Road and 2 and 4-wheeler parking from Ladyhill Karavali rounds upto Ladyhill.

No Parking Zones : From the left of Balmatta Circle road upto Christian Institute gates ; from Emjays Complex upto Juice Junction and upto the overbridge on Bridge road, on either side of the road from Nayak’s Opticals to Ambedkar Circle and from here upto Lord Krishna Bank at Milagres where parking of vehicles on right side of the road is banned ; no parking from right side of Milagres mansion upto Hampankatta Circle and on either side of the road from Alukkas on Light House upto the main gates of Tagore Park and from Balmatta Juice Junction upto Balmatta Circle.
