Pangala Bridge inviting danger

Posted on Apr 24th, 2010 and filed under Special Report.

PADUBIDRI: The Pangala Bridge on the National Highway near here is presently inviting danger with its side railings damaged due to the several accidents that have been reported from the bridge in the recent past.

What is glaring is the apathy of the authorities concerned in reconstructing thee damaged railings. As of now, some wooden planks have been placed here as temporary railings. But the fact is that these wooden railings are in no way able to prevent accidents.

Already, the bridge has been a witness to a number of accidents and one reason cited by the locals for the increasing accidents is the failure of the authorities to reconstruct the hump, located a little away from the bridge that was removed during the repair works of the road. Particularly, newcomers on this route unable to notice the bridge on the curve, speed forth resulting in accidents.

Locals strongly feel the reconstruction of the road hump would go a long way in reducing the accidents on this bridge. It has also been noticed that the jasmine sellers on the roadside who earlier used to make business whenever vehicles slowed down near the hump, now were coming right on the middle of the road, thereby affecting smooth movement of vehicular traffic.

Locals feel there is an urgent need for the departments concerned to reconstruct humps on this road and thereby help in reducing accidents.
