MANGALORE : The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has slapped a fine of Rs 7,375 on the National Insurance Company Ltd for deficiency in service rendered to a policy holder.
Aliamma, a resident of Mulki was a policy holder under Universal Health Scheme with a sum insured of Rs 30,000. The policy was in vogue from February 19 last year to February 18, 2009. Meanwhile, Aliamma suffering from fever, gastritis and chest pain was admitted to Mulki Nursing Home on April 2008 for treatment and the hospital bill accounted to Rs 2,375. She had later submitted an application to the insurance company to claim the insurance amount.
But the company rejected the claim on the ground that Aliamma had a heart ailment even before she secured the policy. Following this, Aliamma moved the consumer court and the court which confirmed that ‘a heart ailment can be detected in a person after he falls ill,†has in its ruling said that there was nothing wrong on the part of the company to accept her application for claim.
The court has directed the insurance company to pay the treatment cost of Rs 2,375 apart from Rs 5000 for the mental agony suffered by the petitioner.
