BANGALORE : The animation industry which was at its peak in the year 2006, is presently at a low ebb with several animation graduates and diploma holders who have been qualified as animators after spending lakhs, presently struggling to find a job for themselves.
In Karnataka hundreds of private institutions including 25 government institutes provide education in animation and every year over 10,000 students secure diplomas in animation.
Though there were BPOs that preferred animation graduates once, the situation is not the same now. Karnataka presently has about 25 creative animation studios which have hired 15,300 animation artistes and 2300 game developers. As of now, they reportedly have no vacancies.
Even the Karnataka Visual Effect and Gaming Meeting organized in the capital recently by the Association of Bangalore Animation Industry, has held serious discussions on the problems confronting the animation education field.
At the meeting, Rajesh Turakhiya, Managing Director of Frame Box Animations VFX has pointed out that banks did not provide loans for students pursuing animation course as animation and gaming has still not been considered an industry in turn forcing students to go in for loans at a higher interest rate.
He also emphasized the need for the government to adopt a stand in favour of animation students.
It is also noteworthy here that the animation institutes do not offer a highly recognized degree, masters degree or diploma to their students, when compared to other courses.
