Burqa row : Affected Muslim students fail in SSLC exams

Posted on May 9th, 2010 and filed under Youth Affairs.

MANGALORE : The three female Muslim students who were demoralized after they were forced to remove burqa before writing the SSLC exams at the Ganapathi Pre-University College in Mangalore, have failed in the exams.

When there was no such rule to remove burqa while appearing for the exams on the first day i.e. on April 1, the students who were wearing burqa were forced to remove the same on April 5. When the affected girl from Jokatte had complained to her parents, the Campus Front of India had taken up the case and had even staged a protest. This had even led to the arrest of a few.

During the protest the aggrieved students had even feared that they may not succeed in the exams as they could not concentrate following the controversy that had made teachers view them with an eye of suspicion.

The other two students who failed in the exams were from Saralikatte and Gerukatte in Uppinangady.

Meanwhile, the parents of the students have alleged that their children were good in studies and it was only due to the burqa row that they could not perform well in the exams. They also argued that the act of forcing students to remove the burqa was against Islam.
