MANGALORE : The Gram Panchayat elections in Dakshina Kannada district was by and large peaceful at most of the places, except in some booths where police had to resort to lathi charge to quell the party workers engaged in heated duel.
In ward number 3 of Badrianagar of Pavoor village, Congress workers complained to the election officer against the CDPI activists who were distributing model ballot papers to the voters. But no sooner they were told that it was not unlawful, it resulted in some sort of clash forcing police to resort to a mild lathi charge.Balakrishna, son of a former GP member Chennamma was injured in the caning.
Meanwhile, the situation remained tense in ward number 5 of Pavoor, when a crowd gathered at the scene no sooner police arrived in search of an old accused.
In Dharmanagar of Boliyar, BJP workers attacked a Muslim person who had accompanied his aged mother while casting votes. Here too the police had to resort to a lathi charge.
In a booth in Pajeer ward, BJP workers took an election officer to task when it came to light that a person who had come to vote could not exercise his franchise as someone else had already cast his vote. A similar situation prevailed even in a ward in Konaje.
A booth in Pakshikere in Kemral village too witnessed a tussle between Congress workers and a group of rebel Congressmen over the issue of ballot papers. Here too police had to resort to lathi charge.
In Kenchanakere BHJ workers were agitated on knowing that Congress supported candidates were distributing xerox copies of their symbols to the voters.
Finally the Mulki police who arrived at the spot seized the xerox copies.
