SHRC orders probe into Honavar church attack

Posted on May 19th, 2010 and filed under General.

BANGALORE : The State Human Rights Commission has directed the Western Range IGP and Chief Secretary of the Home Department to undertake a thorough probe into the recent attack on a church in Honavar town. The Commission has directed the authorities to submit a comprehensive report within six weeks.

It may be recalled here that unidentified miscreants had stoned the Holy Cross Church of Honavar on May 12, damaging the glass case holding the statue of Mother Mary. The SHRC had registered a case in this regard voluntarily and has now issue the directive to the police authorities.

“ There has been another attack on a place of worship in the state. If the state government does not take steps to stop such ceaseless disruptive activities, then the people will start suspecting the administrative policy of the government and even get agitated. The state government had been warned even earlier when moral policing and peace disturbing events took place. But the situation has not come under control,” the SHRC Chairman Justice SR Nayak has said.
