Hidden treasure in Anadka reserve forest looted?

Posted on May 21st, 2010 and filed under Special Report.

PUTTUR: Traces of some people digging up a land in the midst of the reserve forest near Shantigodu Anadka in Puttur Narimogaru village have been found with rumours doing the rounds that thieves had gained hands on huge treasure that was hidden in the forests.

It was noticed on Wednesday morning that a place near the roadside on Majalukadu road was found dug up. In fact it was a place where a snake’s hiding place (Hutta) was located earlier and people feared this place as a cobra was seen in this place often.

It is being said that some people who arrived by a vehicle here on Tuesday night have escaped with the treasure. It has been noticed that the thieves who have dug a small trench in a square shape have removed something from the pit.

Locals fear the thieves might have taken advantage of the heavy rains that lashed the area on Tuesday night. Moreover no house is also located in the two km vicinity of this area.

People who visited the area found as many as 100 lemons sliced and kept at the spot where the land was dug up. The place was also sprinkled with ash. Some of the trees too have been smeared with ash giving room for suspicion that the thieves might have secured the help of some sorcerer to gain hands on the treasure.

History says that the area around Shantigodu belonged to the Jain royal family which had ruled the area. The presence of several Jain Basadis in the area also substantiates this fact. There is also a belief that the royal clans ruled here might have buried its treasure in this area. Locals however feel the chances of any outsider resorting to this act were remote as no outsider was aware of the hidden treasure in the forest area. Reports say the thieves might have committed the act with the help of some locals. However no complaint has been lodged in this regard so far.
