MANGALORE: The MCC does not have any plans to fell the trees from Kankanady to Marnamikatte. The environmentalists are raking up an unnecessary controversy for which MCC will register a case against them, said Mayor Shankar Bhat.
Addressing a press conference in his office he said “certain organisations and newspapers are unnecessarily blaming MCC regarding felling of the trees. Some of the self styled environmentalists are raising a hue and cry that trees are going to be felled from Kankanady to Marnamikatte and this is being blown out of proportions by the local media. The trees need not be felled as the proposed road will be widened by 7 meters on either side. As long as I remain the Mayor of this city, the trees will never face any axe†he assured.
Case against environmentalists
Some of the activists have destroyed the properties belonging to MCC as a mark of their protest against the proposed felling of trees. They have removed the road divider. The MCC will not only register a case against those responsible for this but also against those newspapers which have published false reports that MCC has proposed to fell the trees†he said.
In was reported in some sections of the media that MCC has gone ahead with the felling of the trees without obtaining clearance from the department of forests. These officials of the forest department are tarnishing the image of MCC, he regretted.
