MANGALORE: Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj has informed that a proposal to construct a bye-pass linking Suratkal to Talapady has been sent to the Union Government for its approval. The new bye-pass is expected to ease traffic congestion on the National Highway 47.

Addressing a progress review meet of developmental works in the district on June 22, Tuesday, the DC said the 30 km long bye-pass will pass through Kotekar, Konaje, Adyar and Maravoor. The bye-pass construction would also ease traffic congestion on the Suratkal-Talapady route, he said.

The meeting also deliberated on the proposal to extend the Melkar Junction-Mudipu-Konaje-Tokkottu Junction. Congress leader Ramanatha Rai informed the meeting that Kamalnath, Union Minister for Transport and Highway has already approved the project.

Legislator UT Khader however urged the district administration to request the Union Government to restrict the Melkar Junction-Tokkottu Junction widening to 30 meters as otherwise several people would lose their land in case the road was widened by 40 meters.

If DC said the road widening between BC Road and Mangalore on the NH 48 would benefit a great deal, Khader alleged that the project would only lead to loss of land to several people and alleged that some businessmen were behind this proposal.

He also pointed out that the roads connecting Mangalore were in a dangerous state.

District in-charge Minister Krishna Palemar and other officials attended the meeting.
