KARWAR: Reports of late suggest that a minister from Mangalore, had been to Karwar
recently, just to get his share from the companies which had exported ore worth crores of
rupees that had been seized and stocked at the Belekeri port by the forest officials.
The minister who had not bothered to visit Karwar despite several complains of unlawful
activities in the port and the problems faced by poor fishermen, had rushed to Belekeri
port, the very next day the ore was stolen. The minister during his visit was seen in the
company of the representatives of the companies, that had been responsible for the guilt
and had seen to it that a case was registered against a junior officer while leaving the
port director and chief port conservator scot free. It has been learnt that the suspended
officer had not agreed to take up the responsibility of safeguarding the seized ore fearing
such a situation would arise.
Sources even reveled that the companies reportedly at fault in this illegal export had
gifted the minister Rs 5 crores for his help.
